Is making a gallant stand at Mar-Commotion.
Countless press releases are written each year that
are nothing more than keywords wrapped, somewhat
grammatically, in empty phrases. Their only purpose is
to attract search engine spiders; they are rarely read by
people. Sure, we're as guilty as others -- the client
pays, we write. But, still, we practice the art when we
can.
If you pay us enough, we'll write press releases that
leap out of an editor's Inbox and jump up and down on
the desk. Whether that editor works for the New York
Times or Bob's Flea Market Gazette, depends on your
story -- we can't work miracles, but we'll get you the
exposure you deserve. And, no, we can't guarantee
Oprah.
Who said keywords can't be cool?
Kim Cramer is no different than most of
us, a little skinnier, maybe. But she
had an idea, a great idea for a web site:
FantasyHusband.com.
And after spending more than she'd
budgeted building the site, that good
idea was about all she had left.
Several months and minimal revenue
later, she asked for our help.
Well, to be truthful, I was dating Kim's
sister at the time, and thought I'd score
some points by helping.
Anyway, I wrote the press release
below and her phone started ringing.
Pub the Old Fashioned Way
This press release was faxed and emailed directly to
media outlets -- first in her immediate area, and then to
national news and entertainment media.
The results: live interviews on Geraldo at Large and Your
Morning in Philadelphia. A spot about her ran for a day or
so on CNN. Dozens of local newspapers and television
stations picked up Kim's story.
Unfortunately, Kim was not prepared to monetize the
hundreds of thousands of site hits the publicity generated.
The kleig lights dimmed, the site hits dwindled back down,
Gerry doesn't call anymore, and Kim's FIRST 15 minutes
of fame passed by.
But it was all fun, she tells us. And I have a feeling that
people will hear from Kim again.
BTW, we can generate pub the new fashioned ways as
well.
